The annual column on the books I have read in this pandemic year is back. I didn't manage to "win" the nice reading challenge launched by Goodreads (2020 Reading Challenge), but in any case I always achieved a more than satisfactory number of readings. Best authors ever read known in 2020 This year I just have a short list of newly discovered authors who I discovered this year and whose works I plan to read more of. Charles Brandt : with his book The Irishman (I Heard You Paint Houses). It is halfway between a novel and an interview and tells the events that led to the killing of Jimmy Hoffa. The film didn't excite me much, but the book is truly a masterpiece.
Jonathan Littell : I had had his very long novel (over 900 pages) Le Benevole (Les Bienveillantes) for some time, a story set in Nazi Germany and starring an SS officer. The novel is in first person and can be read quickly. Monumental. Davis Grubb : The Night of the Hunter is considered his best novel. Well-characterized characters, a story that can be read Special Data without slowing down. The author of the year I have no doubt: Charles Brandt with his great The Irishman . This year too it was easy to find. The most read author I want to introduce the author whose books I read the most in 2020: the undisputed winner is Stephen King , with 6 novels read. Friedrich Nietzsche follows him closely with 4 and Dennis Lehane with 3.
Best books read We also give space to the best books read (since below we move on to the worst). In addition to the 3 already mentioned, I would like to point out: The Stephen King Institute The boarding school and Tana French's refuge The Death of the Grass by John Christopher The Duce's People by Christopher Duggan The Dark House by Dennis Lehane Edgar Allan Poe – Life through letters The Thin Dark Line by Joe R. Lansdale The 42nd Parallel by John Dos Passos Ken Follett's Pillar of Fire Butcher's Crossing by John Williams Worst books read Here are some of the books I didn't like at all. As I always say: de gustibus… The 21 ways not to publish a book by Fabio Mauri: save your money. Advertised as a "funny pamphlet", I found nothing funny, much less boredom reading it. Poems by Giosuè Carducci: first poems read in 2020 and first disappointment.
